Are your cosmetics safe?

I am a not a crazy health conscious person, but I am fairly aware and concerned. Are you?
Well, recently my friend introduced me to a video that is definitely worth a look at. It "examines the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo. Produced with Free Range Studios and hosted by Annie Leonard, the seven-minute film by The Story of Stuff Project reveals the implications for consumer and worker health and the environment, and outlines ways we can move the industry away from hazardous chemicals and towards safer alternatives. The film concludes with a call for viewers to support legislation aimed at ensuring the safety of cosmetics and personal care products."
Basically I asked myself "Does it bother you at all that you are daily increasing the toxic levels in your body by applying your favourite face lotion or lipstick?" And of course I said yes. But why don't I let you watch and make your own decision......and after watching... I have a question of the day!

  1. Ok first off, let me say that the sources that this woman uses are irrelevant because much of what she's concerned about (parabens and toxins) are EXTREMELY closely monitored by the FDA. They have to be, it's the law. Parabens for one, are actually derived from a natural source: berries. They have been shown to be used in minute amounts in products, thus, reducing the chance of irritation and any adverse effects.

I can't help but think of this as "green propaganda". I am ALL for the idea of a healthy and worthwhile natural product as long as it works well. So many natural products out there, that use this safe and green technology that she's talking about are FAR from natural, contain irritating ingredients, and do much more harm than good to people's skin than they really think. Natural cosmetics are a HUGE marketing ploy right now and before anyone buy into the idea that they're "safer" because the word "chemical" sounds scary, I think they need to do their research.

  4. David: first off it is an american video, and in america it is quite different then everywhere else when it comes to cosmetics and ingredients.
what you have to think of is:
is it safe to keep a product on the skin for a full day, everyday?!
also most cosmetics are only tested for a 2 week period. and results nor side effects are 100% guaranteed nor closely examined.
I agree with you that "chemical" scares people and in some cases it shouldn't, however in some it does. you just have to be aware!
I do know the whole scare of parabens and I do know where they come from. However. it was found in some tumours in the past..... causing concern.
What really stood out for me aout this video was the fact of how she mentioned..... are we really safe with layering many products, everyday.... for all day?
thanks david for your lovely comment! deff appreciated! keep your opinion coming!

  5. I think that this critique points out some great misleading information in her original version.
