Wicked Witch of the West: " ... Look what you've done! I'm melting! melting! ... Oooooh, look out! I'm going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!"  Unfortunately none of us want this to happen to us or our makeup. Instead everyone wants natural looking skin during the summer months yet thinking about putting makeup on is out of the question for most of us as the heat makes us feel as though we are suffocating, especially when it's humid as well. Those of you who were graced with beautiful skin have nothing to worry about when it come to not wearing foundation during the heat. Unfortunately if you are one like myself who feels like you cannot go out without "your face" on or a foundation, I'll try and shed some light on melt proof, water/sweat proof and oil proof solutions.
The Science Behind Waterproof Makeup
Waterproof makeup is made to not come off, run or smudge even when they are wet. It is especially helpful when we are in a humid place and our makeup just seems to slide off. What differentiates regular cosmetics and waterproof cosmetics is that regular cosmetics contain an ingredient called dimethicone, as strange as it sounds, it is in fact only a silicone based oil. Waterproof makeup contains a different form of dimethicone called dimethicone copolyol which is a waterproof form of the same oil which is formulated to adhere to the skin and hair.
Making it work
As easy as it sounds, well it is really as easy as it sounds. Unfortunately the natural looking makeup that works in all other seasons of the year, doesn't hold up to the test of humid and heat. And it can often feel sticky, suffocating or heavy on the skin. However there are things you can do to help melt proof your makeup for the summer.
Cleanse the skin well
As always it is important to start your makeup application on a well cleansed skin as this will make sure that there is no residue left on the skin as well as help with a smooth application of makeup. For those who have an oilier skin it is recommended to use an oil absorbing toner before applying makeup.
Don't moisturize
Yes you read right, don't moisturize on those hot hot days. Try a hydrating toner instead as this will act as the moisturizer, opt for something without alcohol as it can be too drying to the skin.
Use a liquid or mattifying sunscreen
Nowadays there are sunscreens that come in liquid form that feel like water on the skin and blend right in. You can also find mattifying sunscreens that stop the oil. Because let's face it, it's hot - that means there's sun - and that means we MUST protect ourselves from the sun! Check out my review on one!
Prime, Prime, Prime!
Although it feels like another layer, priming your face and your eyes will help to control oil and keep your makeup fresh all day long.
Use a waterproof foundation
If you are likely to go out in the sun and you need to wear a foundation, use something that is waterproof. Use gel based foundations instead of cream ones. Or better yet try a powder foundation that is oil free. You can blot off any excess foundation with a tissue.
Use hardly any eye makeup
Due to hot weather, sweating, tearing, or rubbing it is advised not to use heavy eye makeup as it can become creased or messy. Try lighter colours with a pearly finish as even if it becomes oily then it can be like a glow around the eyes.
Don't overdo the mattifying powder
Applying too many layers of a mattifying powder on a oily or hot skin can give the face a "messy look" or blotchy look. Try only applying one layer.
Seal it!
A great idea is to seal your makeup in with a sealing spray designed to waterproof your foundation to help avoid damage done by smudging, tears, humidity and water.

im the worst when it comes to sweating on my upper lip. even if im flustered, my upper lip goes WHITE and the rest of my face stays normal. my foundation always needs to be reapplied on my upper lip.

one day i got sick of it so i rolled some of my underarm deodorant on my upper lip and BAM, problem solved.

that solves my upper lip problem but in summer i doubt im going to put underarm deoderant over my whole face before i apply my foundation haha. ew. this post will definitely come in handy so thanks :)
