I've never been one to choose a product because of the brand name, whether it be a drug store brand or a department store brand or even a spa brand. But it always amazes me what my customers believe or think about a brand even before they try it. Most times it's because they have heard that a product did not work for their friend and that in turn makes them, quite often miss out on a good product. Don't get me wrong, it's worth it to ask your friends what they think, but don't base your whole judgement on a brand off of it.(This includes product reviews...yes even mine! Because us bloggers are just giving OUR opinion.)
I have a friend, and they know who they are, who buy products only because of the "name" or popularity of the brand. This friend also thinks that only prestige brands have good quality. Even though this is their opinion, I simply do not agree....but to each their own!
So my question of the day is:

Oh missy! I know that they have quality products that are cheaper.
I do believe they are gems that are a bit harder to find though (you must admit that! I mean look at Covergirl Eyeshadow Sticks *shudder*)
I just prefer to have all name brands on my face, I enjoy pulling out makeup to retouch and have the case being gold plated, etc. haha
I chose: depends on the product.
For face creams and eye creams, I guess something in me prefers the name brands like Clinique instead of drugstore. Though I must say I've heard a great deal about Oil Of Olay for anti-aging. But that's more for mature skin as far as I know.
For Make-up I prefer brands like Mac, Bobbi Brown, only because their eyeshadows seem to be less powdery and more pigmented, their lipsticks feel better, eyeliners last more, etc. But then there's things like blush, liquid liners and mascara which I always go to the drugstores for.
I do agree that you shouldn't knock it before you've tried.
