BeauTy.MyThs.BusTed.-ParT.3.

It's not nice to keep secrets. Yet it seems that in the beauty industry there are so many myths and secrets that have been going around for years. I want to bust some of these myths here! Hope you learn something! This is the third part of this series. To see myths #1 through #30, Click here.

Myth #31: Sleeping on your back can prevent wrinkles - TRUE! The American Academy of Dermatology says that sleeping in certain positions may result in "sleep lines." After time, these lines can turn into deep-set wrinkles.

Myth #32: Split ends can be repaired -
FALSE! Unfortunately there is no way to repair split ends. To get rid of them you have to cut them off and just prevent them from coming back with good hair care.

Myth #33: You should stick to only one brand or line of products - FALSE! While this is smart to do if you are very sensitive, you definitely do not have to do this. And this myth was most likely created by a cosmetics line that wanted to keep customers loyal to their line.

Myth #34: Natural ingredients must mean it is hypoallergenic then - FALSE! Everyone is different, and just because some products contain natural ingredients does not mean you cannot react to them. If you are allergic, you will definitely see a reaction.

Myth #35: Chlorine from swimming in a pool will turn your hair green  - FALSE! Definitely a common misconception. However it is actually the copper that can turn your hair green. If the pool is not cleaned regularly or properly maintained, then it can have copper residue which in turn could turn your hair a greenish color. Now this is mostly for blondes since their pigment is so light, but all you have to do is switch to a low pH shampoo which will help combat against greening.

Myth #36: Crossing your legs will give you spider veins- FALSE! There are many ways to potentially develop varicose veins, but  crossing your legs is not one of them. Some examples of what could causes varicose veins include genetics, obesity, trauma to the skin, etc.

Myth #37: You can breakout from your cell phone- TRUE! Your cell phone is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. Some experts say the average cell phone has more germs than doorknobs and even toilet seats. So make sure you  clean your cell phone screen every so often to help get rid of any bacteria or germs.

Myth #38: Pumping your mascara will make the application better. - FALSE! Do not do this as all you will be doing is pumping air into the tube causing the mascara to dry out. If you are almost out of mascara, try twisting the brush instead.

Myth #39: Rinsing with cold water makes your hair shiny - FALSE! Hair specialist Phillip Kingsley, author of “The Hair Bible” advises, “Cold water may help close your pores, but it doesn't affect the hair cuticle in the same way." Your hair might look a bit shinier, but only briefly, and it won't get any healthier. Keep your hair shiny by eating protein-rich foods, working omega fatty acids into your diet, using a clarifying shampoo once a week and applying a nourishing conditioner every time you wash.

Myth #40: If my makeup contains SPF 15 then I'm protected from the sun -  FALSE! You won't get adequate protection from makeup alone, unless you were to cake it on. For you to get adequate protection, you need to use a teaspoon or two of sunscreen for just your face.

Myth #41: SPF 80 is better than SPF 30. -  FALSE! A SPF 80 will not protect more than SPF 30 if it doesn't contain ingredients that block both UVA and UVB rays. There are three ingredients to look for: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and mexoryl, and as for the SPF number, you shouldn't be wearing anything less than SPF 30 with UVA/UVB protection."

BeauTy.MyThs.BusTed.-ParT.2.

A little while ago I started the first part of a series that busts beauty myths and secrets, this is my second installation of the series.......
To check out Part one of this series Click Here
Myth #21: If you have sensitive skin, you must have been born with it - FALSE! Sensitivity in the skin can can happen at any time. Sensitivity can happen later in life for many reasons such as hormonal changes, allergies, use of a new product, medication or seasonal reactions

Myth #22: It's never too early to start using anti ageing treatments - FALSE! While using a product to prevent aging is okay, before the signs of aging, using a product to get rid of ageing is probably not the best idea. Instead use a daily SPF with broad spectrum protection and a moisturizer that has antioxidants.

Myth #23: Makeup with anti ageing benefits is just a gimmick- FALSE! The products out on the market nowadays contain ingredients that protect, nourish and repair the skin, such as vitamins, antioxidants and SPF.

Myth #24: It's bad to wash your hair after dying it - TRUE! When you colour your hair, it takes time to penetrate and attach itself to the hair, meaning that if you shampoo too early, you'll mess up the process and end up losing some colour. Try washing your hair 2 days after dying your hair. And always use products appropriate for colour treated hair, as this will prevent fading.

Myth #24: Shimmery products can make you look older - TRUE! Shimmery or frosty products can tend to accentuate wrinkles and sit in the folds. Try using products with a subtle sheen in a blush or eyeshadow, this will give the skin a nice healthy glow.

Myth #25: Toothpaste will get rid of pimples - FALSE! While toothpaste does dry the pimple, it can dry so much to cause a scar. Active ingredients in toothpaste are usually fluoride and mint, which can seriously irritate the skin. Instead opt for a product that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for the stubborn pimples.

Myth #26: Brushing your hair when it's wet is bad - FALSE! It all depends how you do it. While in the shower is best. Do it when you have conditioner already on the hair. Using a paddle brush or wide toothed comb is best. Comb the hair in small sections, working from the ends up. And remember hair that is wet, is very fragile and can break.

Myth #27: Washing your hair every day is bad for it - TRUE! This is true for everyone, especially for chemically processed hair. By washing too much you can dry out the hair, as the hair needs the natural oils from the scalp to stay moisturized. Try using a dry shampoo on days that you don't wash, to freshen up. Or try a leave in conditioner for a curly or wavy hair.

Myth #28: Your eyelashes can fall out if you don't remove your mascara - TRUE! Built up mascara can block and clog the eyelash follicles, which can then lead to breakage.

Myth #29: The best place to try foundation is your inner wrist - FALSE! As this can seem like a simple solution, it in fact is the lightest skin on your body. Any foundation should be tested on your jaw line.

Myth #30: The more expensive the product- the better it is - TRUE! and FALSE! Good quality ingredients can come at a price, but saying that does not mean that dishing out more money can deliver better results. Do your research about what you're being sold and ask for samples. Get a cosmetics ingredients book/dictionary. Also you know what works on your skin and what doesn't. Remember every company has great marketing teams to back them up, so be savvy and research! And everyone expects and wants different results, yours may not be the same as the next.

FraGrAnce.DoN'Ts..- HoW.To.TeSt.A.PerFume.ProPerLy.

Find the perfect perfume can be challenging and annoying sometimes. So many choices and not knowing where to start. But finding the right perfume can be all in the way you try them. Not many know how to properly test a fragrance. And unfortunately many people end up having to smell hundreds before giving up or luckily finding the right scent.

#1 - You decide on a fragrance by how the cap smells: Smelling the cap of the fragrance will smell like the top note only of the perfume. Also this is not a proper way to see if you like the fragrance as you can no smell it on your skin and see how it reacts. Never pick your fragrance this way.
#2 - You smell your wrist right after you spray the perfume: Everyones skin reacts differently to perfumes; the same perfume can smell completely different on you as it does on someone else. After testing the perfume on your wrist, allow it to settle into your skin for at least 20 seconds.
#3 - You smell the perfume for the first time and already have your decision about it: Just as the saying goes; don't judge a book by its cover, don't just a perfume at first scent. To fully get an idea about a fragrance, you need to let it bloom over a 30 minute period. Find a couple that you like and try them on your wrists. After 30 minutes, smell them again and decide. Many times I have people tell me that they love the perfume when they bought it but when they wore it, it was horrible.
#4 - You sample too many perfumes at one time: Trying too may perfumes at one time can be overwhelming. After about 3 they all seem to smell the same. If someone offers you coffee beans, this may help temporarily, however 3 is the maximum you should smell at one time.

#5 - Men can only wear men's fragrance; Women can only wear woman's fragrance: Just like clothing, just because it says for men does not mean that you cannot wear it! If you love a smell, try it on and see how it reacts with your skin. I personally love the FCUK for mens fragrance and wear it occasionally.

#6 - Less is MORE: One to three spritz of a perfume should be the maximum when wearing them as over spraying can be overwhelming. Most people wear perfume, yours isn't the only one. Try applying the perfume to pulse points: behind the ears, wrists, ankles or behind the knees. You can smell your perfume when you first spritz it, however our olfactive systems shut down after a while as a defence mechanism. But that does not mean that no one else can smell it!

BeaUty.mYthS.ThaT.DesERrve.To.Die! - BeauTy.MyThs.BusTed.-ParT.1.

It's not nice to keep secrets. Yet it seems that in the beauty industry there are so many myths and secrets that have been going around for years. I want to bust some of these myths here! Hope you learn something!
Myth #1: More sun = more tan - FALSE! Spending more time in the sun in one sitting actually does not result in a darker tan. We have a natural tanning level that averages about 45 minutes in the sun or 20 minutes in strong sun. This means that our skin becomes saturated and you will actually risk burning rather then tanning more.
Myth #2: The hotter the sun = the darker the tan - FALSE! Temperature has nothing to do with how dark a tan you will get. The best tans actually are achieved not in the peak hours(12pm-4pm).
Myth #3: Moisturizer with SPF 15 + Foundation with SPF 15 = SPF 30 - FALSE! It is incredible how many people still believe this is true. While it is good to layer sunscreen, you unfortunately cannot add up the protection factor. Using a good SPF 30 minimum is recommended. And make sure to use something broad spectrum(UVA+UVB).
Myth #4: If there's rain and clouds = there's no need for sunscreen - FALSE! The suns rays are not affected by the clouds or the wind. The rays still penetrate the clouds and are still very harmful. Wearing a sunscreen daily is very important. Think about skiers, at the end of the day you can tell if they were wearing sunscreen or not, their faces are red!
Myth #5: "My skin is dark, I am protected! and I don't need sunscreen" - FALSE! Your skin may be better protected from sunburn but you are still prone to premature aging caused by the sun. Try a lower protection sun screen instead.
Myth #6: "A tanning bed is safer for my skin than the sun" - FALSE! Tanning beds are like having the sun right next to your face. The UVA(aging) rays are more intense from a tanning bed and the UVB(burning) rays are less intense. This is why many think tanning beds are better as they do not see immediate burning from the sun. Unfortunately the UVA rays are premature aging your skin and you will see this later in life. Ever see a mature person with a huge brown spot on their cheek? Yup! That's UVA rays at work over years and years of exposure.
Myth #7: Swimming protects against sunburn - FALSE! Water can actually intensify the suns rays as the rays penetrate through and reflect. The cool and fresh feeling may feel like it is stopping the rays but it's not. This is why there is water resistant or waterproof sunscreen.
Myth #8: Only someone overweight can get cellulite - FALSE! Cellulite can affect every woman, no matter if she is skinny or thick. Cellulite is a problem affecting the thighs and butt area in woman that affects how fat is stored and distributed. Basically fat is trapped by stiffened collagen.
Myth #9: Your hair will grow faster if you cut it - FALSE! This also concerns your nails as if you file them more they will not grow faster. You hair grows from the roots and not the ends. It only seems to grow faster because you are trimming off split end. But cutting hair will not stimulate growth.
Myth #10: Eating Chocolate gives you pimples - FALSE! This has never really been proven. The assumption is likely made because most woman eat more junk food during their period or when they are anxious. If you feel moody, the chocolate will stimulate serotonin or cortisol which will make you feel happy. These two hormones are also responsible for stimulating the oil glands(which can trigger a pimple).
Myth #11: Oil on an oily skin is BAD! - FALSE! This in fact is the opposite. Oil on an oily skin is great! Many people with oily skin try to rid their skin of oil. It is the excess oil you should be concerned with. If you skin is free of oil, it will actually trigger the oil glands to produce more oil. Oils in products are actually high quality nowadays and absorb quickly rather than building on the skin.
Myth #12: To keep your skin clear - drink 2 litres of water daily - FALSE! First who has the bladder for this?! Second, our bodies are amazing and we have our liver and kidneys to help detox our systems naturally. It's best to listen to your body and drink water only when you are thirsty. Myth #13: You should never wax before or during your period - TRUE! Before or during our periods, hormonal changes can intensify the sensitivity of nerve endings. This means that waxing can be more painful during these times. The best time? After your period.
Myth #14: Filing your nails in one direction, instead of back and forth - will prevent shredding - TRUE! Filing each nail from the corner of the nail toward the middle will help to avoid breakage or splitting.
Myth #15: Plucking your eyebrows will stop them from growing back - TRUE! Tweezing your eyebrows over years and years can fatigue the hair follicle and in some cases, the hair may not grow back.
Myth #16: You can't make up for lost sleep - Sleep debt is real - TRUE! The average woman needs 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep per night. Hours of sleep lost to stress, overworking and late night partying are gone forever!
Myth #17: Your lashes will grow faster if you apply petroleum jelly(Vaseline) to them - FALSE! It may condition the lashes to help strengthen yet it may actually plug the glands on the inner rims of the eyelids that produce tears, flush out debris and protect against infections.
Myth #18: Hypoallergenic products cannot cause allergies - FALSE! This only means that the product is free of common allergens. Usually fragrance free as fragrance is a major irritant. Yet everyone is different
Myth #19: Cucumbers reduces eye puffiness - FALSE! Yes ladies this one is false. As it is not the cucumber that reduces the puffiness. Ever hear that saying? "As cool as a cucumber", you would never hear someone say put a warm or hot cucumber on your eyes. It is in fact the cold of the cucumber that reduces the puffiness, as does anything cold. The cold causes the blood vessels around the eyes to contract. "That being said, you can lay a dirty sock over your eyes and it could help. As long as it is cold." hahaha!
Myth #20: Brushing your hair 100 times a day makes it shiny - FALSE! I remember being told this as a little girl and trying it. Even counting my brush strokes to make sure I had 100. Brushing your hair too much may actually cause more harm than good, especially if its curly, dyed or damaged.
